Discworld Mud

Discworld Mud is a fantastic mud based off of the wonderful book series written by Terry Pratchett, please go read it! You join a guild where you can be An adventurer, assassin, priest, thief, warrior, witch, or wizard. Each guild offers you a fun play style, and skills to learn. The great thing about this system is, anyone can spend experience points to learn almost any skill in game, a guild just makes guild related skills cheaper to learn. So, you can be a thief who also uses faith skills to travel across the world or shield yourself with magic. If you have the time, you can customize your character to your heart’s content.

The mud offers crafting skills, including sewing, leatherworking, jewelry and more. You can learn to play instruments or learn an in-game language.

Connection Info

Pick your favorite mud client and connect with the above info. If you need a client I highly recommend Mushclient, a flexible, customizable mudding client.

There are two preconfigured Mushclient packages built by Quow who is a DW player. These versions are widely used by the DW player base and are pretty handy. This first preconfigured package is for sighted players and doesn’t offer built in screen reader support though with a bit of work it can be added. The screenreader portable package has built in screen reader support and works with NVDA, Jaws, Narrator and other screen readers right out of the box. Both versions offer maps, an item database and the ability to speed walk around cities. The Quow plugins are accessible with screen readers as well. If you’re playing a wizard the MindSpace plugin is super handy to track your skills for casting spells and to find new spells. If you’re new to Mushclient I highly recommend downloading the Quow version to get started. You can use Quow’s version even if you decide to play other muds, though the DW specific plugins obviously won’t work on other muds.

resources

There is a vast online community with player ran sites with tons of useful tips and tricks. Nerds figured out the math behind the game and made it easy to understand, so you can figure out skill bonuses, health regen and guild point regen. There are guides for new players and each guild has its own site with a lot of helpful information.

My Tips and Tricks

It can be overwhelming when you first join the game, take a moment and take in the world. You start in a newbie town called Pumpkin Town, where you can complete starter quests to learn the basics. If you have questions, use the newbie channel to ask for help. You can Type: newbie Hi, I’m new. This broadcasts your message to other newbies and newbie helpers.

After you’ve spent some time questing around the town you might have an idea which guild you’d like to join but just in case make sure to read the different guild resource pages linked above.

After you leave the newbie zone you’ll end up in a city. I recommend Ankh-Morpork as it’s a great place to find quests, things to kill and each god’s temple.

I recommend putting your xp into fighting skills, an attack skill and a defense skill. A thief for example would train fighting.melee.daggers and fighting.defense.dodge to help them attack npc’s. You should boost your chosen fighting skills up to level 50 or level 75 to be able to kill lower-level cash cows. Good targets for getting money include accountants, merchants, traders, and dealers. Make sure they don’t have bodyguards and please avoid attacking bankers until your defense skill bonus is above 350. If you’re a thief and you’ve trained up your stealing skills these are also great targets to snatch, steal and filch money and jewelry from.

If you’re playing a priest, witch, or wizard it’s also worth investing in rituals and spells that offer protection like minor shield for priests, and TPA for wizards.

For priests specifically work on getting the rituals for totem and dust devils. Totems will serve as a tank and do their best to soak up incoming damage. Dust devils will help attack targets and also soak up a bit of damage.

Wizards get access to a skeleton warrior who will help you fight, though it will take some time to raise your skills high enough to successfully cast the spell. I recommend getting TPA trained up first as it is a great shield you can acquire with a bit of work. With your TPA shield and a decent defense bonus, 250 or higher will allow you to kill and gather xp.

Find Me in Game

If you join Discworld or are already playing you can find me playing as several characters; Zack, Zackariah and Dizkiz are my primary characters. Send me a tell and I’ll help you get started and I’m happy enough to give you advice.

Zack: He’s my thief and loves roaming around stealing and backstabbing. He’s one of my older characters on DW and is my favorite to play. Thieves are awesome and are way better than assassins.

Zackariah: He’s my Pishite priest known for healing, resurrecting dead players and portaling people across the world.

Dizkiz: He’s my wizard who scribes scrolls to sell, casting TPA shields on players and working on his fireball rampage to take out rooms of targets. He also enjoys portalling around and exploring the world.

Final Thoughts

I truly love Discworld Mud; it’s been the one mud I’ve played since I’ve started mudding back in 2005. You can customize your character, gear and play style to suit your ideal gaming experience.
